Ningbo Students Graduate at Parliament House in December 2003 Ceremony

Graduates of the Master of Business Administration program at Ningbo University
graduated at the School of Business ceremony at Parliament House on Wednesday.
The graduates were welcomed by a number of UC staff including the Vice
Chancellor, Prof Roger Dean, Mr Sam Wong, Patron of China Alumni. They
were presented with a small gift to mark the occasion and to recognise
their valuable future role as UC Alumni.

Beijing Management College of Politics and Law Meets With UC Law School
Five
delegates from the Beijing Management College of Politics and Law including
President Zhang Jingsun, met with academics from the Law School to discuss
cooperation between the two institutions to deliver Law programs.
The
delegates also attended the Law School Graduation ceremony at Parliament
house on 17 December, with President Zhang joining the Deputy Chancellor
on stage during the formal ceremony.

Friendship City Visit to UC
9 delegates
from the Municipal Government of Canberra's Friendship city, Hangzhou,
visited the University of Canberra in December. The group was led by Mr
Wang Jincai, Senior Advisor to Hangzhou City Government. The delegation
met with Prof Peter Dowling, Pro Vice-Chancellor BLIS Division and Dr
Chris Aulich, Head of School of Management and Policy, among others. After
detailed discussions, an agreement to conduct a Master of Public Administration
(MPA) program at UC for Hangzhou Municipal Government officials was reached.

Memorandum
of Agreement signed between University of International Business and Economics
and University of Canberra
Professor
Wong Fuming and 4 other delegates from the University of International
Business and Economics visited UC in December to sign a Memorandum of
Agreement (MOA) to jointly conduct the Master of International Customs
Law (MICL) and Master of International Customs Law and Administration
(MICLA) programs. During their visit the delegates investigated opportunities
in other disciplines including Business and Public Sector Management.
MICL
and MICLA will be conducted by the University of Canberra in conjunction
with the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing
and they will be taught in Beijing. These degrees are a world first and
demand is expected to be high. Graduates from the University are in key
positions in Government and industry - the present Director-General of
China Customs is a UIBE graduate.
The initial intake for these programs will commence in the second half
of June 2004.

Professor
Zhao Shuming, Dean of School of Business of Nanjing University, gives
special seminar presentation at University of Canberra
Professor Zhao
Shuming, Dean of the School of Business at Nanjing University and one
of China's foremost human resources experts , gave a seminar to UC Business
School staff on 17 November 2003 . Professor Zhao talked about the development
of business education in China and provided a detailed analysis about
its future prospects .He believes that the demand for business education
will be strong for decades to come consistent with the fast pace of economic
development and change in the private and public sectors. A copy of Professor
Zhao's powerpoint presentation is available from the CMSU.

Delegation
from China University of Politics and Law (CUPL) visit University of Canberra
A delegation of
five senior academics headed by President Xu Xianming of China University
of Politics and Law paid a three-day visit to the University of Canberra.
The relationship between the two Universities dates back to the 90s, when
the University of Canberra's School of Law undertook a joint research
program with CUPL from 1997 to 1998 on reform of Chinese economic law,
corporate law, security law, bankruptcy, financial law and insurance law.
Conferences were held in Beijing and Canberra and there were exchanges
of staff working on the project. Papers were published in the special
edition of Canberra Law Review and in CUPL journals.
Throughout the
visit, both Universities looked to further the relationship in cooperative
research, exchange of staff, and examine the potential of joint programs.

Winning
the UCU’s Award for Best Cultural Club
The UCU China Club
successfully capped off 2003 by winning the UCU’s Award for Best Cultural
Club. The award recognises the positive steps taken by the club in its
first year.

Chinese
University Delegation visits University of Canberra - headed by Professor
Zheng Nanning, President of Xian Jiaotong University
University Presidents
and senior academics from 16 Chinese universities visited University of
Canberra as part of their study tour visit on October 17. The delegation
was led by Professor Zheng Nanjing, President of the prestigious Xian
Jiaotong University and Professor Zheng Yuanning, Vice President of Guizhou
University. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor John Dearn from University
of Canberra delivered a seminar on Australian university quality audit
issues to the visiting guests.

Letter
of Intent signed between University of Canberra and Ningbo University
for a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration
To broaden the
recruitment base for the joint UC/Ningbo University MBA program, a Letter
of Intent has been signed between University of Canberra and Ningbo University,
by Professor Peter Dowling and Executive President of Ningbo University
Professor Nie Qiuhua, on 17 of October 2003. The agreement provides a
framework which allows graduates with bachelor degrees to enrol directly
in the Graduate Diploma of Business Administration. Students who pass
the first year diploma course can continue their MBA study in the second
year.

MBA Graduation
ceremony held at Ningbo University
The first cohort
of students of the joint UC/Ningbo University MBA program were presented
with a University of Canberra Master of Business Administration Degree
at a ceremony at Ningbo University on 11 of October 2003.
Deputy Director
of Division of Business, Law and Information Sciences, Professor John
Halligan and Director of China Management Studies Unit, Dr Jules Wills
represented the University and attended the ceremony.
Government officials
from Ningbo Municipal Government have also congratulated the students
and offered their continuous support to the program. Graduates expressed
that UC MBA degrees have helped them seek better employment as well as
receive promotions in the workplace.
Two years after
the first cohort of students, the UC/Ningbo MBA program has established
an excellent reputation in Ningbo. The competitive advantage of the program
is that teaching is conducted in English. Students make progressive improvement
with with their English proficiency as well as their academic knowledge.
This is reflected by the 30% increase of student enrolment numbers for
the third intake in 2003.

National
Day Picture Exhibition
Timed to coincide
with National Day, UC China Club in association with China Management
Studies Unit (CMSU) and Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA)
exhibited more then 65 pictures at the University of Canberra. These were
kindly provided by the Chinese Embassy in Australia. The Exhibition -
'China Today' provided a glimpse of the changing modern face of China
and attracted an enthusiastic gathering including representatives from;
University of Canberra, Australian National University, Chinese Embassy
and Business ACT. UC Vice-Chancellor Prof Roger Dean officially opened
the exhibition and spoke of the importance of cultural exchange between
the two nations.

Think Tank
 
The China Think
Tank was initiated by Prof Mohamed Khadra, PVC, Division of Health, Design
and Science and President of the Bruce Business and Community Association
(BBCA) to explore the wide and diverse range of opportunities for Australian
companies in China. The seminar, sponsored by BBCA, aimed to provide members
with advice and assistance on how to deal with China, and provide useful
background on cultural and business norms, business etiquette and negotiations.
Presenters from
the University of Canberra, Austrade, Business ACT and CSIRO discussed
case studies and experiences in dealing with Chinese Government, business
and individuals.

Graduation
visit from UC Chinese offshore partners and students
Graduation week
was busy and exciting for the China Management Studies Unit commencing
with fruitful discussions on the next MPA student intake with visiting
dignitaries from Nanjing University; Prof Hong Yinxing (Deputy Chancellor),
Prof Zhang Yongtao (President of the School of Public Administration)
and Prof Zhang Hongyan (Vice President of the School of Public Administration).
Over one hundred
students graduated from Chinese off-shore programs in July. Together with
554 UC students, more then 30 MPA and MBA students from Nanjing University,
HTIT Guangzhou and UIIE Hong Kong attended the UC Graduation Ceremony
held at Parliament House in Canberra.
After the ceremony,
Ms Wendy McCarthy, Chancellor and Prof Roger Dean, Vice-Chancellor, University
of Canberra hosted a lunch reception at the Hyatt Hotel to welcome our
guests. Gifts were exchanged as symbols of goodwill and cooperation between
the two universities.
The evening before
graduation the students and dignitaries attended a Cocktail Reception
hosted by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Business, Law and Information
Sciences Division, Prof Peter Dowling. This presented an opportunity to
network informally with BLIS academic, adjunct and general staff and with
the Vice-Chancellor Prof Roger Dean.
The China Unit
and academic staff from the School of Management and Policy hosted celebration
dinners for the students and guests at the China Tea Club in Lyneham (a
popular choice that students sought out for lunch the very next day!)
and with the assistance of the UC China Club led campus tours for the
visitors.
The students were
particularly keen to explore the on-campus accommodation and other student
communal areas such as The Hub and the Refectory, as well as keeping an
eye out for the kangaroos known to gather on campus! One tour ended with
a quick stop at UC Convocation to purchase the last two graduation bears
in the display cabinet as a memento of their experience.
As Dr Jules Wills,
Director of the China Management Studies Unit, pointed out 'It is very
important to the graduates, who have undertaken their studies intensively,
to experience campus life and feel part of the University community, they
were all very pleased to explore the campus and to graduate with other
UC students. In fact, their presence added an extra dimension to the ceremony
and illustrates the obvious goodwill between our institutions.'
Many of the students
indicated to Ms Cathy Price, Business Development Officer, CMSU, the importance
of maintaining a relationship with the University through the Alumni Society.
The China Unit is taking steps to establish Alumni in China.

UC China
Club welcomed new comers from China
On Friday evening
July 21, UC China Club held a party to welcome new Chinese students. According
to International Office of the University, as many as 40 students from
mainland China have arrived at the University of Canberra to commence
their studies this semester. Games and entertainments organised by the
Club, as well as active participation of club members and residents filled
the evening with fun and laughter.

Monitor “Wishes of Hope “
A message of good
luck and hope has been sent to those affected by the SARS virus in China
by the University of Canberra’s China Club. The club has sent a
large canvas signed by “hundreds” of well-wishers to a Beijing
hospital. Club member Michael Pigott said the club wanted to “wish
them luck” in their battle against the virus.
“It’s
just a small thing” he said, “but it gave us the chance to
do something and let them know we are thinking of them”.
Mr Pigott said
it also gave some members of the club a chance to “reconnect with
their homeland” by doing something positive. Ting Ting Cui echoed
Mr Pigott’s sentiments and said: ‘We hope they all recover
soon”.

Delegation
visit from Professor Zhang Shuanggu, Counsellor of Education Embassy of
People’s Republic of China
The Counsellor
of Education from the Chinese embassy Professor Zhang Shuanggu and Second
Secretaries Mr Huang Nianping, and Mr Zhang Shichuan visited the University
on July 2. The Counsellor had been invited by Professor Peter Dowling,
Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Division of Business, Law and Information Sciences
on behalf of the University of Canberra. The Vice Chancellor, Professor
Roger Dean welcomed the guests in the Council Room.
Dr Jules Wills,
Director of the Division’s China Management Studies Unit gave a
presentation on UC’s internationalisation activities including programs
at UC for overseas students and the array of offshore teaching programs
UC divisions were conducting in China. Professor Zhang was impressed by
UC’s collaborative arrangements with Chinese institutions. At the
end of the visit, the embassy guests were accompanied on a tour of the
UC campus by members of UC’s China Club.

Visit by Mr Mao Linsheng, Mayor of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province
Following the signing
of a Friendship City Agreement between Hangzhou and Canberra with the
ACT Minister, the Mayor of Hangzhou Mr Mao Linsheng and city officials
visited the Division of Business, Law and Information Sciences on 10 May
2003. The delegation was met by Dr Chris Aulich, Head of the School of
Management & Policy, Ms Helen Appleton, Director PMP and Dr Jules
Wills, Director-elect of the China Management Studies Unit. The UC team
provided a briefing on UC programs and discussed the development of short
courses and a Masters of Public Administration degree for officers of
the Hangzhou Municipal People’s Government.
