Graduation visit from UC Chinese offshore partners and students

Graduation week was busy and exciting for the China Management Studies Unit commencing with fruitful discussions on the next MPA student intake with visiting dignitaries from Nanjing University; Prof Hong Yinxing (Deputy Chancellor), Prof Zhang Yongtao (President of the School of Public Administration) and Prof Zhang Hongyan (Vice President of the School of Public Administration).

Over one hundred students graduated from Chinese off-shore programs in July. Together with 554 UC students, more then 30 MPA and MBA students from Nanjing University, HTIT Guangzhou and UIIE Hong Kong attended the UC Graduation Ceremony held at Parliament House in Canberra.

After the ceremony, Ms Wendy McCarthy, Chancellor and Prof Roger Dean, Vice-Chancellor, University of Canberra hosted a lunch reception at the Hyatt Hotel to welcome our guests. Gifts were exchanged as symbols of goodwill and cooperation between the two universities.

The evening before graduation the students and dignitaries attended a Cocktail Reception hosted by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Business, Law and Information Sciences Division, Prof Peter Dowling. This presented an opportunity to network informally with BLIS academic, adjunct and general staff and with the Vice-Chancellor Prof Roger Dean.

The China Unit and academic staff from the School of Management and Policy hosted celebration dinners for the students and guests at the China Tea Club in Lyneham (a popular choice that students sought out for lunch the very next day!) and with the assistance of the UC China Club led campus tours for the visitors.

The students were particularly keen to explore the on-campus accommodation and other student communal areas such as The Hub and the Refectory, as well as keeping an eye out for the kangaroos known to gather on campus! One tour ended with a quick stop at UC Convocation to purchase the last two graduation bears in the display cabinet as a memento of their experience.

As Dr Jules Wills, Director of the China Management Studies Unit, pointed out 'It is very important to the graduates, who have undertaken their studies intensively, to experience campus life and feel part of the University community, they were all very pleased to explore the campus and to graduate with other UC students. In fact, their presence added an extra dimension to the ceremony and illustrates the obvious goodwill between our institutions.'

Many of the students indicated to Ms Cathy Price, Business Development Officer, CMSU, the importance of maintaining a relationship with the University through the Alumni Society. The China Unit is taking steps to establish Alumni in China.

The club has sent a large canvas signed by “hundreds” of well-wishers to a Beijing hospital. Club member Michael Pigott said the club wanted to “wish them luck” in their battle against the virus.

“It’s just a small thing” he said, “but it gave us the chance to do something and let them know we are thinking of them”.

Mr Pigott said it also gave some members of the club a chance to “reconnect with their homeland” by doing something positive. Ting Ting Cui echoed Mr Pigott’s sentiments and said: ‘We hope they all recover soon”.
